Japan : My Oishi Diary

While I was still inside the plane, I kept on visualizing the festive street with a lot of kiosks in the sidewalk, I am closing my eyes and savoring the aroma of foreign foods that I am about to taste. I slowly started to walk and happy to see those kimonos walking side by side with me. Greeting unfamiliar faces with Kunichiwa and trying to converse with them as much as I could, just like those I read in manga. Ohhh boy, I am really going to Japan!

The first thing I did was to take a mental note of popular foods to eat in Japan. Heaven, there are a lot of them and you can find them everywhere; from the kid-friendly Universal Studio to old temples, too busy buzzy Shibuya Crossing and even to the small streets, you can find a place to eat good food.

If you are an insane wandering food soul and wants to hunt it all down to Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, here are the mouthwatering foods you can’t miss when visiting the Land of the Rising Sun :

Sushi at Standing Sushi Bar at Shibuya Crossing

Sushi is sushi because everything about it is fresh. They said that the fishes are caught the same day, so It’s like the ocean served straight at your plate. Though raw, it is very delicious and best to eat with miso soup and matcha tea.

Okonomiyaki at Yukari Restaurant

Okonomiyaki  is Japanese own version of a pancake. Yes, its pancake made of pork, shrimp, lots of veggies, special sauces and mayonnaise. Trying out the Okonomi Yukari Restaurant along Akihabara Street, the haven for anime shops. You have the option to cook your own Okonomi, but since it’s our first time, we let them served us. Having the cooking stove in front of us, we enjoyed watching how it was done. Cooking the meat and seafood firsts then adding the veggies and topping it with special sauces and mayonnaise. The rich flavor of Okonomi is so delicious and you don’t have to order rice anymore.

Spicy Egg and Meat Omelet at Pomme’s

The colorful restaurant of Pomme’s is located at the central of Harujuku Street, where Tokyo Fashionistas gather is famous for their special omelets which were served quickly for about 10-15 minutes only. The spiciness of their sauce compliments the unique taste of the Japanese rice inside the omelet. If you want a fast serving of your meal, Pomme’s is the place to go.

Steamed Pork and Bun at Osaka Castle

Reminiscing the shogun era at Osaka Castle is starving hence eating this siopao-like food is perfect! It has very soft meat and doesn’t need any sauce.

Meat and Salmon Breakfast at Nara Park

The deer sanctuary Nara Park has the best breakfast combo for me. Super healthy platter of meat with eggs and fresh salmon with eggs combined with a fresh veggie salad with lemon zest. And oh, don’t forget the white mashed potato on the side!

Red Mongo Beans at Fukushima Inari

Filled with red beans and served hot, the cute fish bread is for those with a sweet tooth.

Savory Rice Balls at Arashiyama Bamboo Park

Sweet in the inside and salty at the outside, these sticky rice balls is enticing to eat while watching the passerby at the Bamboo Park.

Takoyaki at Osaka Takoyaki Museum

For those who love Mugiwara no Ichimi manga, you probably want to try the authentic Takoyaki. Osaka Museum offers a whole food court dedicated to Takoyaki Stalls only. Best served while hot, the chewy octopus can be enjoyed with different flavors.

Kyoto Ramen at Daiichiasahi

Kyoto’s most popular ramen house. The long line outside the restaurant testified the popularity of their special ramen. If you are a Naruto fan, I can say this is their version of Ichiraku Ramen House. The noodles are so fine and with the distinct tasty soup. Best to eat with a side dish like kimchi and don’t forget the pork barbeque!

Shabu-Shabu and Sukiyaki House at Shinjuku

My most favorite Japanese food, you can avail the unlimited Sukiyaki for just 2,000 Yen. The restaurant is also good for groups who wants to drink some Sake while eating Sukiyaki. It is very popular in Shinjuku.

Matcha Ice Cream at Kyoto Inn

The matcha ( green tea ) ice cream is popular in Japan because of its unique taste and healthy effects. You can also enjoy this with Soy flavor ice cream and a cone. Matcha Ice Cream is available in almost every ice cream parlor in Japan.

Eating everything in Japan is no joke, you have to prepare yourself to digest all of it because all of them are delicious! OISHI!!!!!!  I am reluctant to leave but one thing is clear to me,
I SHALL Return and EAT MORE!
